William Schmidt Obituary

SCHMIDT - WILLIAM F (BILL) SCHMIDT

Bill Schmidt, cherished husband of Helen Marie Barlow Schmidt, passed away in Brooks Hospital on Sunday, August 24, 2025 at the age of 86.

Bill was born Friedrich Wilhelm on April 18, 1939 in Großwelsbach, Germany to Karl F. and Marianne Hühn Schmidt. He is survived by wife Helen, siblings Susan Skiebe, Chris Schmidt, and sister-in-law Antje Schmidt, children Bruce Schmidt, John (Melissa) Schmidt, and Julie (Herman) Wiebe, grandchildren Russell Wiebe, Genevieve Schmidt, and Jess Wiebe, and by numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brother Carl Schmidt, sister-in-law Marg Schmidt, and brother-in-law Manfred Skiebe.

Bill and his family immigrated to Canada in 1953 to fulfill a sugar beet contract in Coaldale, Alberta. Later, they purchased a small farm in the Rainier area. Over his long career, Bill enjoyed working for auctioneer Herb Christie, Bevan, Hutch and Hagen, and Evergreen Implements in Brooks.

In 1967 while working in Taber, Bill was introduced to his future wife, Helen, by mutual friends, who invited them for an evening of euchre in their home. They were married in Helen’s home town of Mitchell, Indiana in 1969 before moving to Brooks to start their family and enjoy 56 years of marriage.

After his retirement at age 73, Bill enjoyed (and excelled at) gardening, German crossword puzzles, and had great fun playing bocce with the Seniors 55+ Club.

Although humble and quiet, he was known by all as incredibly intelligent, kind, and caring. He will be greatly missed as a husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and co-worker.

We are grateful for the outpouring of support that Bill experienced during his last few days. We appreciate friends and family that visited, took turns doing night shifts, and kept us fed. We are also thankful for the kindness and compassion of nurses, physiotherapists, and doctors at the Brooks Hospital.

A private gathering will be held at a later date to honor Bill’s memory.

Arrangements are in the care of Thom’s Funeral Home in Duchess, Alberta.
