Thomas (Tom) Thairu Kimani
‘A Gentle Giant’
The late Thomas Thairu Kimani was born on 18th October 1970 in Wambugu Farm, Nyeri County where his father worked.
His parents were Henry Kimani Thairu and Mary Njeri Kimani. He was the fifth born in a family of six children, namely Rose Wambui, late Beatrice Wambui, Catherine Wambui, Phyllis Nyokabi and Sylvia Muthoni.
Tom met the love of his life, Purity Njeri Thairu in 1991, he and Purity married young and had their children Sylvia Njeri Thairu, David Kimani Thairu and James Kariuki Thairu. Tom, known as ‘Baba’ by his children was a most loving father. His heart embraced his wife and children with meekness and expressed his love to them unreservedly. To Tom, his family came first and there was no doubt about that.
Tom grew up in the Catholic church and at 37 accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour when he was with Purity in Australia. Tom has had a deep relationship with God. He loved the Word of God and used it as an anchor for his soul. One of his favourite verses was Isaiah 57:1-2 ‘The righteous perish and not one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil’. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.
Tom attended Gicheha Primary School in Rongai and graduated in 1985, then joined Rongai Boys Secondary School and graduated in 1989. In 1991 he attended Gilgil Technical School for a year and on to Rift Valley Technical School for Mechanical Engineering and Comboni Technical College where he attended a diploma course for two years. Tom furthered his education in Mechanical Studies and successfully challenged the Master Mechanics Red Seal in the USA and Canada.
Tom’s passion for mechanical engineering began when he was in elementary school and his focus was undeniable. Tom worked for Hogan Trucking Logistics in St Louis, USA, Sterling Trucks in Calgary, Glover International, Mikevail Trucking before starting his own business Rift Valley Tracking Limited where he worked passionately and diligently until his demise.
Previously Tom was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma and underwent a successful surgery to remove the affected kidney. He had treatment for a year and in February he started feeling unwell and was scheduled for a surgery in April. Unfortunately, the surgery was complicated which led to his death on April 25th.
Tom is survived by his Spouse Purity Njeri Thairu, their children Sylvia Njeri Thairu, David Kimani Thairu and Olive Nyambura and Natasha Njeri, his grand children Eliana Waweru, Liam Gachomo and Thomas Thairu. He was an uncle (Uncle Tom), a nephew and a dear friend to many.
Tom owned one of the best smiles. His smile warmed people’s hearts. He told all family members, ‘I Love You’ after every conversation. Tom spent his life helping people. He lay his life and that of his family while he sacrificed to ensure that people’s needs came before his. He was a people person. Tom had a love for drones. He loved going out of the city to fly his drones and derived a lot of joy from it. He loved fixing cars and tracks. He loved farming and did so from young age. He was an active member of the Beddington Pentecostal (BP Church), Kenyan and Business Community.
