Tamara Ashley Backfat – Kiitokiyaaki (Prairie Chicken Woman)
It is with great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of a daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend Tamara Backfat.
Tamara – was born on May 23, 1989, in Strathmore, Alberta. Tamara attended Chief Old Sun school and graduated from the Siksika Outreach School with her high school diploma and obtained her Security License. Tamara was a free spirit who always went with the flow, she embraced spontaneity and lived her life in an unconventional way. She was gentle but strong and her love for adventure was matched by her generosity. She had an infectious laugh and had the ability to find beauty in the ordinary. Tamara had a profound love for music, she was dependent on the joy and fulfillment she got from listening to all genres of music but notably Bob Marley. She would call her mom and sister Treasure just to ask them to play her a song over the phone or she would call her niece Brinley to sing her a song. You would always see her with a notebook to capture her thoughts and her random drawings. She loved fireworks and often got into trouble with her silly and high- spirited behavior. Tamara was a member of the Kiitoki Society. She loved nature and the water and would often be found along the Bow River whether it was in Siksika, Calgary or Banff. Tamara leaves behind her mother and father, Wilda and Calvert Yellow Old Woman. Grandma: Eve Yellow Old Woman. Great Aunt: Rena Sinclair, Siblings: Carrie-Ann (Mike), Kaylo, and her baby sister Treasure. Nephews and Nieces: Braxton, Brinley, Blake, Tyra, Kaylei, Taysha, Elijah, Trask, Kay, Niiko. Maternal Aunts and Uncles: Romeo, Ann-Marie (Rob), Daphne, Dwayne, Robert (Barbra), Glen, Jason. Paternal Aunts and Uncles: Robert, Herman (Michelle), Jeannie, Flora, Melvina, Evangeline, and Derrick Brass. Numerous Cousins on both the Crow Chief and Yellow Old Woman families.
Predeceased by her Brother Riley Yellow Old Woman, Maternal Grandmothers: Carrie Backfat and Valerie Crow Chief. Paternal Grandpa: Gordon Yellow Old Woman, Uncles: Buster Crow Chief, Benedict Crow Chief, Charlie Wayne Yellow Old Woman, Melvin Yellow Old Woman, Fred Yellow Old Woman Aunts: Lillian Crow Chief, Marcia Medicine Shield, Judy Ann Brass, Delphine Yellow Old Woman. Cousins: Leonard Yellow Old Woman, Todd Yellow Old Woman, Renalda Yellow Old Woman, Charmaine Yellow Old Woman, Cheeks Delaney, Joshua and Valerie Breaker, Leslie and Fred Bird.
Her extended families are Backfat, Ayoungman, Crow Chief, Sitting Eagle, Yellow Old Woman, Delaney, Mayfield, Black, Young, White Elks, Healy, Red Gun, Winnipeg, Raw Eater, Plaited Hair, Weasel Child, Sinclair, Gladstone. We apologize if we missed anyone Tamara was loved by many.
Wake services will be held at the Gordon Yellow Fly Memorial Arbor Thursday, January 30, 2025 at 5:00pm. Funeral services will be held at the Gordon Yellow Fly Memorial Arbor, Friday, January 31, 2025 at 11:00am. Graveside Services at Paul Little Walker Cemetery. A feast will follow at Gordon Yellow Fly Memorial Arbor.
