Stanley Black Obituary

Stanley "Uncle Stan" Black
It is with great sadness that the family of Stanley Ross Black announces his peaceful passing on July 1, 2026, at the age of 73.
Stan was born and raised on the Siksika Nation. He was an old cowboy through and through—a man who believed in hard work, keeping his word, helping his neighbours, and getting the job done. He loved horses, cattle, old pickups, country music, and visiting with family and friends.
As a young man, Stan worked in Calgary with Geinow Windows and Doors before returning home to Siksika, where he became an experienced farm and ranch hand, working for Gordon Big Snake and Curtis Big Snake. In his younger years, Stan also attended firefighter training in Lac La Biche and often recalled having to run drills in full gear up the hill at the town monument. He later joined Siksika Agriculture and continued with Siksika Farms under SRDL, where his strong work ethic and dependability earned him the respect of those he worked alongside.
Stan went on to serve his community with Siksika Health Services in Medical Transportation, where he safely transported countless Siksika members and Elders to medical appointments. Along the way, he quietly encouraged many people on their journey to sobriety, offering support, friendship, and a listening ear. He later worked with Siksika Home Care, continuing his service to Elders with kindness and respect. He also worked as a bus driver for Darrell Breaker before finishing his career with the Siksika Board of Education, where he safely transported generations of students. No matter where he worked, Stan took pride in doing his job well and serving his community.
Stan is lovingly remembered by his son, Dustin Red Gun; his sons Cody Dixon and Quinton Broad Scalplock; his sisters Sally Black, Eileen Black, and Sheila Black; his brother Sidney (Melva) Black; his best friend and brother Curtis Big Snake; sisters Betty & Joan Poor Eagle and brother Darrell Breaker; his former wife, Roxy; and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and many dear friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Johnny and Maude Black, along with many cherished relatives who welcomed him home.
Those who knew Stan will remember his sense of humour, his kindness, and his willingness to help anyone who needed it. He wasn't a man of many words, but if you needed a hand, he was there.
Many will also remember his infamous 6:00 a.m. phone calls. It didn't matter if you were still asleep... if Stan was thinking about you, he was calling. Whether it was to check in, tell a story, or just say hello, those early morning calls became something his family and friends came to expect. Looking back now, they're memories that will be treasured forever.
Stan enjoyed country music, horses, good company, and making his famous chili. He loved his dogs, Maverick, Precious, and Memo; and took pride in a hard day's work. He believed in showing up, keeping your word, and treating people with respect.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Siksika EMS, the members of the Gleichen RCMP, the physicians, nurses, and health care teams at South Health Campus and Vulcan Hospital, and a special thank you to Chris Thom for the exceptional care, compassion, and kindness shown to Stan and his family throughout his illness. Your support and dedication will never be forgotten.
A Wake will be held at Stan's home on the Siksika Nation Sunday July 5, 2026 at 6:00 pm
