Rex Many Guns Sr. (Saotatsaomaitaaki - Overall Believer)
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, grandfather, uncle and friend Rex Many Guns Sr. on Monday, January 2, 2023 at the age of 71 years.
Rex was born on April 17, 1951 at the Blackfoot Hospital (Siksika Nation, AB). In Rex's younger years he was known for his childhood nickname "Frisky", once he got older as an older teen/young adult he no longer wanted to be called by his nickname. Rex was educated at Crowfoot Residential School and later attended Drumheller Composite High School. Rex became a rancher along side his father Phil and brother Roger. At a young age Rex excelled in boxing and was a part of his cousin Clifford Many Guns Boxing Club. Rex was employed with the Blackfoot Bussing Co-op as a bus driver (1970's). In 1979 he attended the RCMP training in Regina for the Special Constable Program and graduated in 1980. Rex then became employed as a Constable with the Gleichen RCMP for 2.5 months then switched to the Siksika Tribal Police force from 1980 - 1986.
Rex is survived by his children; Kerrylance, Rex Jr.(Jolie), Cherilee, Teshawna (Cory), Kaylee, and Dalaree. His sisters; Roslyn, Ann Marie (Leonard), Harvina (Rudy), and Jaylene (Randy); brothers; Wayne (Trina) and Clayton (Joan); 21 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Shelly Many Gus and his parents Phil and Ada Many Guns; brothers; Wayne, Roger, Terry, Gary Many Guns, and Adrian Big Old Man. His sisters Angeline Bear Chief and Priscilla Three Suns, his grandson Kaylem Big Snake, his God Son Dedric Yellowhorse, and plus numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews
Rex believed in his traditional ways and was respectful of all the teachings he learned from his grandparents. He comes from a large extended family. His paternal grand-parents James & Mary Many Guns which includes the families of Many Guns, Bull Bears, Big Tobaccos, Cutters, Rabbit Carriers, Red Guns, Scalplocks, Fox, Cutmane,Hindbulls, Medicine Shields, Solways, Wolflegs, Healys, Big Throats, Wagner's, Sure Chiefs & Louis's. His maternal grand-parents Rex Backfat & Ei'ka including families of Backfats, Blacks, Breakers, Little Lights. Also relatives from Kainai, Peigan, Browning & Heart Butte Montana, Tsuu'tina, Maskwacis. Family apologizes for any family missed.
Wake Services will be held at his house Map 3A House 119 (Siksika Nation, AB) on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at 3pm for family and 6:00 - 12 a.m. for public. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (Siksika Nation, AB) on Wednesday January 11, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with the Deacon Nelson, Presider. Graveside Service to follow at Little Chicago Cemetery (Siksika Nation, AB). His children would like to thank members of the Siksika Nation Community for their prayers and donations.
