Ramona Lowhorn Obituary

With great sadness, we announce that our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunty Ramona Lowhorn (Royal) passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Hospital. She was called home to Heaven on February 8, 2022, for her spiritual journey. On September 3, 1941, Ramona was born in Siksika Nation above Little Chicago at Boy Chief's home and was raised in traditional Blackfoot language and culture teachings. Her faith is Christianity and Blackfoot spirituality, and she believed in Love, Caring, Respect, and Forgiveness for others. She prayed every day for peace and harmony for all people, especially the well-being of family and friends. Ramona was dedicated to her family by constantly working at many positions in her career. She was a caregiver for people with disabilities and was a registered nurse who worked at nursing homes for the elderly in the United States.

When she moved back to Canada, Ramona became a bus driver for Gleichen Elementary School, teacher's aid at Arrowwood School, resource worker for Old Sun Historical Museum. Blackfoot Language Teacher at Crowfoot School Jr High School, Old Sun Community College, and University of Calgary Linguistics Department. She worked at the Glenbow Museum as a Liaison, interpreter, translator, and artifact identification personnel. Ramona was also a firefighter cook during a fire or fire ban season. She was on numerous committees; the Siksika Health committee, Siksika Education Board, and The Bassano Hospital Board, to name a few. In her leisure time, Ramona volunteered and was a sports supporter for her children and grandchildren, in all types of sports from Hockey, Baseball, Volleyball, Track Field, Cross Country Running, etc. In her later years, she enjoyed playing Hand Games and Bingo.  

Ramona is survived by her children Alfred (Roxanne) Low Horn, Deatrice (Grant) Blackhorse, her Grandchildren Carrissa (Sohkes) Auger-Low Horn, Troy (Taiya) Weasel Fat, Christopher (Samantha) Low Horn, Daniel Low Horn, Tamona Blackhorse (Tad), Grant Jr. Blackhorse, Sunny (Raine) Blackhorse, Dilayana Blackhorse, Kaylynn Blackhorse, her Great Grandchildren Cedar Auger, River Auger, Messiah Weasel Fat, Zhander Blackhorse, Ezmay Blackhorse. Alona (Bernie) Theoret-Bear Hat, Ricky (Marion) Bear Hat, and Leonard (Ann Marie) Good Eagle are her last surviving siblings. Her families were Black Kettle Family, Hind Bull Family, and Brass Family.

Ramona is predeceased by her biological parents, Jack Royal and Alfreda Little Light and stepfather Pat Bear Hat. Her siblings Leona Royal, Harvey Royal, Frank Royal, Darrell Royal, Floyd Royal, Rhoda Bear Hat, Liberty Bear Hat, Eric Bear Hat, Patrick Bear Hat. Ramona will be genuinely missed by all who crossed her path. She would talk to anyone no matter their status in society, and she was a Matriarch of the entire Treaty 7 community extending into the USA.
