Melvin Joseph Solway

SOLWAY Melvin (Sonny) was born on April 11, 1945, in Siksika Nation. The patriarch of the Solway family was called home to be with Our Lord on April 21, 2020 in Calgary, Alberta. Sonny was a humble and outgoing man with many friends. He was a family man and had a deep connection with all his children and grandchildren. His true passion was raising cows and horses. He owned and trained many racehorses in his lifetime.  In his earlier years, he worked with Kesler Ranch as ranch hand, Siksika Tribal Police, Siksika Band Ranch, Siksika Administration as security and custodian, and as an Oil and Gas Monitor for Siksika Nation for 17 years.

Sonny leaves to mourn his loving wife of 54 years, Georgina; Sister in-law Jeanette; Children Joseph Bastien, Melvina (Alfred) Many Heads, Marsha (Howard) Pretty Youngman, LouAnn (Almena) Solway, Irene Solway, Cedric (Leonda) Solway, Ike (Susan) Solway, Tammy (Levi Jr) Many Heads, Pam Solway and traditional daughter(s) Delores (Mitch) Right Hand,  Liyah (Mark) Twoyoungman. His grandchildren Darris, Keyvan, Trevor, Kaitlyn, Kelsey, Jacey, Adam, Bradin, Tyler, Blaine, Gina, Alex, Jewel, Emmitt, Riley, Liam, Zia, Zane, Tavell and 12 great-grandchildren. His siblings Margaret Good Eagle, Rosemarie (Darrell), Adrian (Cheryl), Frank, Marlene, Alvin, Steven (Elenor), Garth; Brother in law, Wilfred Soop, sister in law Annebelle Solway, traditional siblings Gordo (Rita) Horn, Ramona Low Horn and Bradford Little Chief.  Sonny’s In-laws, Clement, Joseph (Evangeline), Gerald (Debra), Bernice (Bill), Theresa (Jason).

Sonny was preceded by his parents Adam and Rosie Solway; siblings Gloria McMaster, Geraldine Soop, Lillian Solway, Doris Rollingmud and Andrew “Curly” Solway. Sonny also leaves numerous relatives and family of Solway’s, Medicine Shields, Hind Bulls, Scott’s, Holloways, Rollingmud, Munros, White Eagles, (Solois) (Montana), Solway (Cold Lake) and Swans. 

Wake Service will be held at the residence of Georgina Solway April 26, 2020 at 2:00 pm, Rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral Service will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Cluny at 1:00 pm. (for the funeral it will be invited only due to COVID-19), Graveside service at St. Joseph Cemetery, Crowfoot Creek, Siksika Nation. Feast to be held at the residence of Georgina Solway. 

The family would like to thank Calgary Foothills Hospital- ICU Pod A, STARS air ambulance, Strathmore Hospital, Siksika Home Care, Dr. Sader, Dr. Docrate, Dr Filichuck, Siksika EMS, and Bassano EMS.

Keeping with Alberta Health Regulations, Church is attendance is by invitation only.
