Melinda Stevens Obituary

We, the Family, sadly announce the passing of our dear mother, Melinda Stevens. She peacefully passed at Strathmore Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones, on Friday, March 31st, 2023. The wake will be held on April 5th, 2023, at 5 pm at the home of the late Walter and Melinda Stevens residence. The Funeral will be held at the Gordon Memorial Powwow Arbor in Siksika Nation on Thursday, April 6th, 2023, at 11 am. Mrs. Melinda Stevens was born to the late Pete Crow Eagle and Jane (James) Crow Eagle on April 7th, 1950, at the Pincher Creek Hospital. She was 16 when she met the love of her life, the Late Walter Stevens; they got married and moved to the Siksika Nation, where they resided for 55 wonderful and fulfilling years. Together they had three handsome sons Dion Stevens, Kevin Stevens, and Shawn (Jennie) Stevens. In 1996 they welcomed their fourth son, Tyson Crow Eagle, into the family. During her life, she loved watching sports, but her favorite team is the NFL football team, the San Francisco 49ers. Although mom, dad, and their kids traveled around, she talks explicitly about their trip to San Francisco, where she saw the Golden Gate Bridge. Mom also loved playing hand games wherever games were being held. She especially loved attending the games in Northern Alberta and the Scarce Reservation. She was a hand game champion a few times, but the most recent win was in Kehewin, Alberta. Melinda was a firm woman with a big loving heart, which was exposed in how she cared for her sons and grandchildren as she spoiled them with love and always ensured they had everything they needed, even when they moved away from home. She also welcomed her numerous adopted kids into her family and took their spouse and their families as her own. Melinda is survived by her sons Kevin, Dion, and Shawn (Jenny) Stevens; her grandchildren – Kiesha Stevens, Regan Stevens, Lydell Stevens, Kaylem Stevens, Ralna Pard, James Pard, Johanna Mc Master, Dailyn Panther Bone, Gabriel Panther Bone, Johnathan Oka, Jay-Jay Oka, Beth Stevens, Brayden Stevens, Blain Stevens, Brock Stevens. Her great-grandchildren: Wylie Sitting Eagle and Zyes Sitting Eagle. She is also survived by her adopted mother, Rose Red Gun, and special aunty Louise English. Melinda is the second oldest of 12 children. She is survived by her siblings Betty Black Forehead, Myron (Annette) Crow Eagle, and Karen Brave Rock. She loved and missed each of her siblings daily. Melinda called on her big sister Betty for guidance and comfort. Whenever her younger sister Karen came around, she never let Karen leave without a fight. She always talked about how much she missed her younger brother, Myron, his wife, Annette, and their kids. She is survived by her in-laws Michal Stevens, Robert (Judy) Running Rabbit, Dunkin Winnipeg, Alan Stevens, and her special in-laws Fred (Pam) Rabbit Carrier, Keith Rabbit Carrier, Elroy (Lenny) Rabbit Carrier, Jackie Stevens, Jennifer (Alan) Medicine Traveler, Myrna Stevens, Bryan Stevens, Rhoda (Leonard) Black Horse, and Anna (Clement) Black Water. Mom was a remarkable woman to all her adopted kids. She gave all her adopted daughters advice on life and marriage. She always knew the right words for encouragement, especially when protecting all her sons-in-law. She is also survived by her adopted Kids – Keely (Leo) Pard, Myron McMaster, Carla (Adam) Spotted Eagle, Terry Kennedy, Bert Vielle, Jean (Desmond) Panther Bone, Joan (John) Vielle, Vivian (Richard) Sitting Eagle, Sandra (Radford) Sitting Eagle/Black Rider, and Tracy (Tara) Cutter. Melinda is survived by her special nieces and nephews Lindsey (Jason) Backfat, Roberta (Sam) Backfat, Cynthia Poucett, Marsha (Les) Crow Eagle, and Lesly Running Rabbit. She is predeceased by her siblings - Stanly, Ralna, John, Judy, Robbie, Johnny, Bobbie, and Joyce. She is also predeceased by her uncles and Aunties Hughie Crow Eagle, Davis Crow Eagle, Edward North Peigan, Bridget Crow Eagle, Beatrice Crow Eagle, Billie Red Young Man, and Georgina Red Young Man.
