Mary Black Kettle – ( Piiksiksinaipitaki ) – October 11, 1939 – December 12, 2020

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Black Kettle at the Hardisty extended care center in Edmonton on December 12, 2020 at the age of 81 years. Surviving Mary are her children; Wanda, Sharon, Emily, Lynn, Lori and Adrian. Grandchildren; Valerie, Dustin, Ashley, Charley, Lisa, Wendell, Kendell and more. Great grandchildren; Claudia, Matthias, Joshua, Blossom, Kale, Devon, Trenton, David, Annie, Kylen, Joziah, Sadie, Rhianna, Tia, Riley, Felicia, Amiya, Sydney, Taylor, Kyson, Lexi, Anna, Myhia, Easton and more. Brothers; Herbie (Karen), Danny (Marisa). Nieces; Caroline, Sharon, Delia, Chandra, Verona, Brenda, Francine, Jennifer, Lori, Angela, Gail, Denise, Jenny. Nephews; Larry, Rufus, Spikey, Alvin, Jerome, Ronnie, Terrence, Aaron, Blaine, Francis. Many more Nephews and Nieces too many to list. Mary was predeceased by Parents; Francis (Conrad) Black Kettle, Genevieve Sleigh and Stepmom Bona. Brothers; Alex, Roy, Kenneth, Francis. Sisters; Noella, Mabel, and Beverly. Her uncles; Nickolas Black Kettle, Alphonse Sleigh. Aunts; Martha Bear Chief, Monica BK, RoseAlma Many Shots, Lucy Weasel Head, Emma RR, Mary RR. We apologize if we have missed anyone.  Mary attended Crowfoot residential school in her early years. She left the reserve in the early 1960’s and briefly returned in the early 1970’s to reside here. Mary left the reserve and resided in Calgary then onto Edmonton until her passing. Mary was a Nanny and Babysitter for many children whom she took as her own. She was a gentle, compassionate and humble lady who enjoyed a quiet life. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and visiting with family/friends with her infectious laughter. She enjoyed her pastime hobbies such as crocheting, knitting, cooking and bingo. She was dedicated to her church activities and doesn’t miss weekly church services.     

Prior to moving to the extended care center Mary resided at the Pioneer Senior Citizens Place in Edmonton for 18 years and made lifelong friends there. Mary will be missed by her Dearest friends on the reserve. Extended families are; Black Kettle, Conrad, Sleigh, Eagle Rib, Letourneau, Heavy Shield, Little Chief, Wolf Leg, Spring Chief, Weasel Head, Bear Chief, Winnipeg, Youngman. The family would like to thank the following for their support during this difficult time: Siksika Health/CDC Team, Siksika Membership, Siksika Treasury, Frank/Darcy Turning Robe, Lena Running Rabbit, Father Long Vu, Thoms Funeral Home, Staff at Hardisty Extended Care Center, and all the compassionate calls/communications from acquaintances of Mary.
