It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Liza Claire Yellow Old Woman on June 30th, 2023, in Gleichen, Alberta. She was born to Rachel Ermineskin and John Yellow Old Woman Sr. in Calgary at the Holy Cross Hospital on October 21st, 1969.
Born the youngest of ten siblings, she grew up around Calgary and on the Siksika Nation, where her inquisitive and adventurous spirit was allowed to roam free as a young girl. Being the youngest, she was very outgoing and stubborn, which made for many great memories with her siblings and the friends she made around Siksika as she grew into a young woman. She attended elementary school in Arrowwood and Westmount in Strathmore, spent some time attending school in Carry-the-Kettle first nation, and high school in Strathmore. While she was attending high school in Strathmore, she met her first love, Douglas Breaker, who she would eventually go on to have four children with: Lance, Sarah, Erin, and Maxon. Through her children, Liza grew to be known as the neighbourhood “mom” and many of the local kids would gather in her home due to her loving and caring nature. As her life progressed, she showed proficiency for gardening, mechanics, and many types of hands-on work. She was always looking to tinker and recycle items for her various projects she would be working on. She was a free spirit who loved to travel and make friends wherever she went. Often family would refer to her as “gypsy”, due to her constantly being on the move. Liza was excited to be a grandmother, as her oldest daughter is expecting Liza’s first grandchild.
Liza leaves behind her loving children, Lance, Sarah (Joey), Erin, and Maxon; Mother Rachel; siblings, Darlene (Cody), Karen, Marcia (Allan), Joey (Shannon), Adrian (Georgia), Fabian (Bonty), John Jr. (Maria), and Trent; along with her numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Harry and Rosaria Red Gun, and paternal grandparents, Dominic and Clara Yellow Old Woman; late father John Yellow Old Yellow Woman Sr.; her brother Kirby Yellow Old Woman; her sister Mavis Crow Child; her daughter Britany Yellow Old Woman; nephews Benjamin Bull Bear, Kristian Ayoungman, Kirby (Jr) Applegarth, Delaney Applegarth; niece Kassy Yellow Old Woman; and grand-nephew Braxton Smith.
The wake services will be held at Gordon Yellow Fly Memorial Arbor in Siksika Nation on July 6th, 2023, at 7:00PM. The Funeral Service will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Parish in Cluny, AB on July 7th, 2023, at 11:00AM.
