Kathryn Lynn MacWilliam

February 24, 2021

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of (Kathryn) Lynn MacWilliam (68). Lynn was an old soul with a heart for family and community as well as a passion for politics. Her first thought was always for others and to lead by example showing compassion, understanding and compromise. Although she knew she would never make it to space, her love and wonder for it never waivered. Cable packages had to include the Space Channel and it wasn’t unheard of for her to binge...

I was very sad to hear the news that Lynn has died. We were members of CEP 232 when we were NDP staff on Parliament Hill, and later, when I was elected as the MP for Burnaby Douglas I hired Lynn to work with me in my Ottawa office. Her Hill experience and her knowledge of her hometown of Burnaby made her a valuable part of our team. Lynn was a true believer who held strong opinions. She was tenacious-perhaps stubborn-but she wanted the best for people. Her commitment to the NDP was clear, running for us in Alberta a number of times. I’m glad she also got to experience elected politics on Council in Bassano. Sending my condolences to Lynn’s family and friends...

I am sad that I did not know this wonderful lady personally. To be a progressive in rural Alberta is a challenging endeavour. Kathryn seems to have lived her convictions to the fullest and with great love. RIP

I have known Lynn for about ten years, and I never met her. Our contacts were many, mostly through email, Facebook, or phone, but always about how we can make the Province better for all. It is not surprising that only a week before her sudden passing, we were planning Province-wide meetings advance support for progressive policy in Rural Alberta. When I let the Provincial Party know about her passing, I heard back from several staff about the high regard in which she was held, and what a hole she leaves for advocacy in southern Alberta. She was a voice of compassion, justice, and equality. Lynn embraced public services, and it was always her goal to "leave no one behind". Now we are left behind. I hope someone can fill her shoes in Southern Alberta.
