Jess Chizik Obituary

Jess Edwin Chizik passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on December 17th, 2022.

Jess along with his twin brother George were born on July 20th, 1931 at home on the family farm in Bassano, Alberta. He was one of 7 children. His parents George and Alexandria Chizik immigrated to Canada from Ukraine in the early 1920s and settled in Bassano.

He married the love of his life Shirley (Till) Chizik in 1961 and moved into a secondary residence on the farm.

Jess spent his entire life there, growing up and eventually taking it over from his parents.

Together with Shirley, they had 4 children. As a family, they worked the land as well as raised cattle and pigs.

The farm was his favourite place. If you were to pop out there you were guaranteed to find Jess either out tinkering on one project or another or taking a break on his special bench in front of the old red granary.

On the off chance that he wasn't at home, you could usually find him down at the Pool Hall having coffee and visiting with some of the other locals.

Jess enjoyed visiting and sharing stories from his younger years. Born with a bit of a mischievous side, often these stories were about times when he was growing up and the pranks that he and George would play on others. There would always be a few corny jokes thrown in as well and you couldn't help but laugh.

He also loved dancing and could often be found on the dance floor with Shirley at various events.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Ronnie Chizik, Geny (Jesse) Johnston, and Gary Chizik, as well as grandchildren, sisters Mary Konschuh and Vera (Earl), extended family, and friends.

Jess was predeceased by his wife Shirley, daughter Sherry, parents George and Alexandria Chizik, Brothers George and Nick Chizik, Sisters Olga and Ina Chizik.

His life was dedicated to his family and farm. We were blessed to have loved him and to have had him in our lives. Our hearts are grieving and we miss him deeply but are at peace with knowing that he is now with the Lord.

A small memorial for friends and family will be planned for the spring.
