Elsie Jane Backfat (Inakootsisa’ki) was born on March 16, 1950, at Blackfoot Hospital and passed away peacefully in Siksika Nation surrounded by family. Elsie was raised in Siksika and completed High School in Drumheller before pursuing an education in business at Henderson Business College and Olds College; Elsie was extremely motivated in everything she did including working at Indian Affairs and working for many years at Siksika Board of Education before retiring in 2019.
Elsie came from a large family including clans, Ayoungman, Black, Blackrider, Bluebird, Breaker, Catface, Lowhorn, Many Guns, McMasters, Red Guns, Turning Robe, Waterchief, White Elk, Wolf Leg, and Young. Elsie leaves behind her son Andrew and beloved grandchildren Jay, Antanette, Janelle, Angelica, Heaven, Unique, Xavier, Lyric, Drew, Devon, Tasia, and Kylie. Her siblings Bernice, Julia, Ronald (Linda), Clifton (Waylene), Marie, Betty (Ron), Elliot (Tilley), Rex, Romeo, Wilda; Aunts Rena, and Myrtle. Elsie will be reunited with her parents, Philip and Jean Backfat; son Anthony, siblings, Esther, Homer, Katie, Phillip, Phyllis, and Aldina.
The Funeral Service will be held at Gordon Yellow Fly Memorial Arbor, Siksika Nation on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at 1:00 PM. There will be a viewing starting at 10 AM.
