Dion Spotted Eagle Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Dion Trent Spotted Eagle (Pi’ksyiyanikapi) announces his sudden passing on March 2, 2026, at the tender age of 63 years old. Dion was born on May 18, 1962, and he was raised in the Cluny community of Siksika Nation, Alberta.

Dion was a son, father, grandfather, nephew, uncle, great uncle, cousin, and a friend to many.

At an early age, Dion experienced the profound influence of his grandmother, Lucy Crane Bear, who played a pivotal role in his upbringing until her passing in 1970. Dion and his mother had a close bond until her passing in 1976, which left a lasting impact on his life and values. In his young years, Dion resided with his aunty Marie & uncle Ed Calf Robe in Cluny, and with his late grandfather John William Spotted Eagle and family.

Later in Dion’s life, he moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, and attended the University of Regina for four years in Native Studies. When he returned to Siksika, he resided with his aunty Ruth Scalplock and at the Siksika Men’s Lodge. While he was in Siksika, he worked at the Gleichen bottle depot with his aunty Carla Spotted Eagle. In 2013, he moved to Calgary, Alberta, and he worked at Belfour restoration until his illness in 2021.

Dion and his family shared not only the joys of childhood but also the rich traditions and cultural heritage unique to their community, which helped shape him into the person he was.

Dion enjoyed listening to 1970s rock music and enjoyed cycling. His favorite sports teams were the Saskatchewan Rough Riders and the Winnipeg Jets.

Dion is survived by his only child, Dion Jr. Spotted Eagle, and his brother Brent Spotted Eagle; Special friend Kerry McMaster and Stuart Scout, Foster Dad Tim; uncles Leon Crane Bear, Jason, Adam (Carla), and Darcy Spotted Eagle, Randy (Caroline) and Colin Spring Chief; his aunts, Charlene Crane Bear, Mildred Broad Scalplock, Tina Healy, Shirley and Rosie (Malcolm) Spotted Eagle; his great aunt Ruth Scaplock & great uncle Francis Melting Tallow, Rachel Low Horn and Eileen Black; Special Cousins, Roberta, Noran and Edwin Calf Robe, Delbert Broad Scalplock, Danny, Jordan & Horton Stimson, Marisa (Danny) Black Kettle, Leonard Jr. (Rhoda) Black Horse, Clifford, Owen and Mark Crane Bear, Terrance Black Kettle, Nora Crane Bear, Anna and Alex Black Kettle.

Dion had various nieces and nephews which he had a close bond: Jessica Little Leaf, Autumn Spotted Eagle, Eldon Stanley, Nathan Spotted Eagle, Lanny Giroux, Barry Sr. Crane Bear, Dana, Chantel, Shawn, Trevor Scalplock, and Dion Wickberg.
