Derrick McCarthy Obituary

Derrick Joseph McCarthy of Brooks AB passed away on February 1, 2026 at the age of 58 at the Medicine Hat Hospital, with his wife, Susan, and family by his side.
Derrick was born on March 30, 1967 in Come by Chance, Newfoundland to Michael and Alice McCarthy. He was raised in Terrenceville, NFLD. In his past, he worked on boats, railroads and anywhere that kept him moving, until he found his love of welding. He worked for various welding companies around the Brooks area until he started his own company.
He met the love of his life in 1997 after moving to Alberta. Susan and Derrick were married in 2005 where they settled in Brooks. Then in 2014, they started White Shepherd Welding, named after his beloved friend, Teto. He continued welding until the end. He loved keeping busy and spent his home time building and fixing things around their house.
He is survived by his loving wife Susan, brother Earl(Sheila), and sister Pauline(Chesley). His special nephew Brenn(Lori), his special niece Hailey, and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Derrick was predeceased by his parents Michael and Alice, his brother Rodney, special uncle Mike, and both sets of grandparents.
He will be remembered for his love of animals, his lucky beer, having drinks around the fire pit with friends, and never turning his hearing aids on.
Derrick passed away peacefully after a brief illness, and the family would like to thank the staff of Brooks and Medicine Hat hospitals and STARS air ambulance for their loving care. Susan would also like to thank all their friends for all their love and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Thoms Funeral Home in Duchess AB on Friday February 6, 2026 at 2pm. Lunch to be served following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to STARS.
