Daniel Red Crow

Danny was born on September 11, 1957, the first child of Jessie Winnipeg and Willie Red Crow.

He was cherished by his Grandfather, Jack Winnipeg, who would put him on his horse for photos; Danny has the most baby pictures of all his siblings. Danny was raised by his grandparents who spoke fluent Blackfoot which Danny inherited. He enjoyed conversing in Blackfoot with friends, family and especially with his Mom and his late brother Wesley. Like his siblings and cousins, Danny was placed in the Old Sun Residential School. When the school closed, the family moved to Calgary. He and his brother Chucky Yellow Horse worked with ‘Yellow Cabs’. Danny was a professional driver and enjoyed it. He loved his vehicles and working on them. He enjoyed reading as well, he was proud of all the books he accumulated. He also loved to play Bingo at the Bingo Barn. Danny also spent time in Vancouver and enjoyed hanging around with his Siksika buddies; Paul, Beans, and Stewart. Danny moved back to Siksika where he drove for Wilton Raw Eater bussing and for Health Services. He was grateful to finally have his own home. He had his neighbour and friend, Garth Crane, who would come by to help him out and visit.

Danny Red Crow is descended from Kainai Chief Red Crow who had adopted his great-great grandfather, Frank Red Crow. Frank was one of twins born to, an English rancher from Gleichen, John J. McHugh, and the sister of Chief Big Snake.

Danny got his traditional name, Opoenum, from his maternal great grandmother Mary Paula Black Water. Danny had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ earlier in his life; the late Nellie Faulkner was a dedicated Christian who came to Siksika Families by bicycle along with her husband Harvey preaching the gospel. Danny was very proud and honoured to walk his daughter Jocelyn down the aisle when she married Lars. Danny was unlucky in love but rich in his legacy (his children).
