Charlotte Elsie Van Bergen (83) went to be with her Lord on November 22, 2025. Charlotte was born on September 22, 1942 in Rosemary Alberta. She lived in various locations within Alberta until her passing in Grande Prairie on November 22, 2025. Her parents Ruth Margaret Weik married Helmut Harder and settled in Rosemary, Alberta. Erwin, Charlotte, Edith and Laura were born and raised together on the family farm. Charlotte graduated from Rosemary High School. She and her sisters pursued post secondary training while her brother farmed. Charlotte married William, “Bill” Van Bergen on March 7, 1964. She and Bill were proud parents to Philip, Floyd and Carla.
Charlotte took great pride in her career as a school teacher. She was devoted to investing in the lives of children. Her passion for teaching was evident in the raising of her children and nurturing her grandchildren. Listening to children read was a special joy.
Her life was not confined to the classroom. Charlotte was fully vested in the provision for her family. When Bill ventured into his dream of building a family farm, Charlotte put her rubber boots and head scarf on. Cows were milked, chickens fed and kids were prepped for school. Gardens were grown. Freezers were filled and jars lined the pantry shelves. Baking specialities included the traditional Easter bunny cake and her apple kuchen.
Charlotte is survived by her sister Laura of Rosemary, Alberta, her son, Floyd, Wembley, Alberta, and her daughter Carla, Calgary, Alberta. She is predeceased by her brother Erwin and sister, Edith, her husband Bill and son Philip. Charlotte was proud of her grandchildren, Derek and Amy (Phil and Leanne), Jesse, Erin, and Gayle (Floyd and Christine), Ashley and Natalie (Carla and Andrew). She also got to know and enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Emerson, Corban, Reese and Kasey (Jesse and Danni), Grace, Whitney and Hailey (Erin and Craig), and Anna, Connor and Heidi (Gayle and Scott).
Services for Charlotte will be held at Thom’s Funeral Home and Reception Centre, 477 Margaret Ave E, Duchess, AB at 2:00 PM. A graveside service will be held following the service at the Gem Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Canadian Bible Society, 10 Carnforth Rd., Toronto, Ont. M4A 9Z9 or Samaritan’s Purse Canada, 20 Hopewell Way NE, Calgary, AB, T3J 9Z9.
Ready to go, Lord, ready to stay, ready to serve thy will. Ready for service lowly or grand, ready my place to fill.
