Benedict Crow Chief Obituary

AHH’SAHN
BENEDICT (BENNY) CROW CHIEF

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Benedict Crow Chief. Ben’s spirit of kindness and dedication to his loved ones will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Ben was born on June 5, 1974, and attended school at Samuel Crowther K-12, he later continued his education in the Carpentry and Cement finishing trades.
As a child, he was a Kipitai’poka, raised by both his Grandmother Mildred Backfat, and Aunt Carrie Backfat. He was a fluent Blackfoot speaker, one of the few that knew Blackfoot sign language. Benny was the baby of the family and all his siblings always looked out for him as a youngster and in his adult life.
He was a champion Wild Horse racer, Bareback Rider and was a contestant at the Calgary Stampede Wild Horse Race event many times, and rode in the historic Castle Mountain Ride as one of the original members of the Na Soo Wa Rider Society.
Ben learned how to sew teepee’s and liners and became known for his teepees. He will be remembered as a strong advocate for many causes whether it be safe homes, land or proper healthcare for Siksika.
Ben married the love of his life Myra and during their time together raised a beautiful family with their grandchildren who were so precious to him. Ben was so selfless in his love and care for Myra, he donated his kidney for her and took great care of her during her lengthy illnesses.
Ben was pre-deceased by his parents Hugh & Valerie Crow Chief (nee Backfat), and brothers Homer Keith & Hugh Crowchief Jr., and sisters Lillian Crowchief & Marcia Smith.
He is survived by his son Zared Dodging Horse (Keesha), his precious grandchildren he raised Lydia, Petara, Thurmie, and Baby Jeanette Crow Chief, his stepchildren Dallas, Lynette, Cameron, Shaniell, and Kamie, grandchildren Novah, Kayzin, Zarius, and Amaya Dodging Horse, Tadis, Dawnty, Isabelle, Pricella, Ethan, David, Diaz, Aiyanna, Tianna and Zeya.
