Anna Martens Obituary

Anna (nee Peters) Martens formerly of Elm Creek, Manitoba passed away peacefully on December 15, 2022 at 87 years of age. Our mother, Ann, was raised in Springstein, MB on a family homestead with her parents, three brothers, and four sisters (two additional brothers passed away in Russia and Germany). She captured the heart of her husband, Henry Victor Martens, and they were married in 1953. Together, they raised eight children - seven boys & one girl - on an acreage west of Elm Creek. Mom was a hard worker and raised chickens, gardened, sewed, and tended to farm chores. She loved to bake and provided many Mennonite & German meals for us such as stews, cabbage rolls, borsch, roulakuken & fruit platz. In her spare time, she liked to crochet, quilt, and play table games with friends. Music was a large part of our home, with mom playing the mandolin, accordion, & piano, often accompanied by dad or us on the violin, banjo, flute, and even drums at times. She played by ear but continued to teach herself through books. Mom lived out her Christian faith in her day-to-day interactions with others through encouragement & love. After dad's retirement, they were able to travel and mom loved visiting with us and her grandchildren who lived in BC and Alberta. She spent a lot of time teaching her grandkids new things and encouraging them in their pursuits. Babies and small children always brought a smile to her face. Mom loved visiting friends and meeting new people. Her other passion was genealogy, and she created family tree albums that will be treasured. In 2021, Mom and Dad moved out west to live with family. All of us kids were able to spend more time with them in the last year and a half, creating more precious memories. Anne is survived by her husband Henry Victor and children Henry, Ernie, Rudy (Brenda), Gordon (Robyn), Jesse, Judy (Alvin), Lorne (Norma), and Andy, 20 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters Mary, Helen, & Elizabeth.  Anna was predeceased by her parents Bernhard and Margaretha Peters of Springstein, Manitoba, as well as her sister Margaret and three brothers Bernhard (Ben), Peter and Jacob (Jake).
